Vera Sanchez is a native of San Diego and grew up in Logan Heights, which is the focus of many of her stories. She was a ballet folklorico dancer at the age of 3 and quickly learned dances from Veracruz, Jalisco, Guerrero, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Sinaloa, Norteño, and Revolución. She has been an educator for 20 years with a passion for reading and writing that started at a young age. In elementary school, Vera wrote her first story about a dog named, Spot. On the weekends, she would visit local libraries and read books by Judy Blume. Her love for literature expanded in college. Vera earned her BA in English and MA in Education from San Diego State University, a family legacy she continued with both her parents also graduating with their BA and MA from SDSU. In 2013, she published her first novel, Prison Letters: Walking to Honor, which won the Beverly Hills Award for Best Multi-Cultural Non-Fiction. Her sophomore novel, Puto, received critical acclaimed. Her children's book, Jada's Dance for Chicano Park, won several awards including Best Published Children's Book in 2021. Vera continues to work on her craft of writing. She is scheduled to release her second children's book titled, Our Basketball, a dedication to her favorite basketball player, Kobe Bryant, in 2024. Vera is the founder of Barrio Billionaire Publishing where she helps women and authors of color publish their books. When she is not writing, you can find Vera at the boxing gym.
